How to get started with social media: Marketing Strategy Tips for small business
How can I get started on social media? This is a question I often get during my branding workshops with my clients. Here are our top tips.
Today, every business needs to have a social media presence, just as they need a website.
But with so many platforms, how do you know where to start?
1 - Analyse your audience.
You need to understand your target audience and find where they hang out. What is their age, what language do they speak, where do they live, and what kind of content do they engage with?
This will help you define the 2-3 social networks to focus on. You have to make sure you are choosing the platforms that make sense for your business.
Example: Men between 25 and 40 are more likely to use Twitter and Facebook, while women over 30 prefer Pinterest. If you are looking to engage with millennials and gen z, you will be more successful on TikTok. If your audience is other business owners, they are more likely to hang out on Linkedin.
You need to find which platforms will give you more results and focus your strategy on these ones. Start small, find what works and start being consistent in posting.
2 - Create a content strategy
When you have defined whom you are talking to, you should start creating the content strategy.
When to post, what to write and what kind of image/design to share that will resonate with your audience.
Experiment and analyse what works best for you. These platforms provide some very useful insights that are worth paying attention to. Track the posts that have worked well, and figure out why to replicate them in your strategy.
3 - Engage with your audience
Social media is about connecting with others.
Make sure to reply to your customers' comments, but also follow and interact with like-minded accounts in a meaningful way. On Twitter, repost. On LinkedIn, build your network and engage with people’s posts. On Pinterest, create boards where you will pin valuable content from other accounts that can benefit your audience.
4 - Collaborate with other accounts
Your services or products will be more widely known if other people talk about them. Consider working with influencers, as they will drive conversation and engagement around a specific niche, and you will benefit their audience as well. Let them be your brand advocate!
